Floating Presences I

There is a moment in Mimmo Paladino's work when lightness becomes a relevant aesthetic factor. Space is added to the other figurative elements, experienced and organised without ever burdening it, but rather enhancing its integration with language. In the two-dimensionality, the architectural concept manages solids and voids, whilst the designed interventions constitute a sort of large secret map to be deciphered. His carpet features three-dimensional geometric shapes that are arranged with rhythmic randomness, evoking a visual memory that assembles symbols and symbologies but stripped of their original context, thus transforming them into pure images. Paladino strips his signs of their common meaning: numbers can be attributed to exceptions of meaning but also simply read as a presence in space. The branches, also recurring, are juxtaposed with the crooked gestures and traces of infinity that obstruct the dark background with their white. Once again, the contrast serves as a container in which the artist's signs germinate
